   CARTRIDGE BOXES

We make unmarked as well as marked cartridge boxes. Unmarked boxes were common in the Pattern 1857 version. If you prefer unmarked, just let us know. If you are representing particular theaters of operations and would enjoy copies of specific makers productions,  I have listed separately those that we reproduce.  These are high quality, handmade boxes with useable tins.  I have made and collected cartridge boxes since 1972.

We will trade any type of product we make for original cartridge boxes, cap pouches etc. Contract us for details.

These were the early-war Federal contract boxes generally found without makers marks and with un-rivited belt loops.  Also some boxes were made with the belt loops spaced widely apart per the New York Arsenal pattern.  Allegheny Arsenal set the pattern with the belt loops centered under shoulder belt loops.

Pattern 1861 Boxes

1. .58 caliber rifle musket

2. .69 caliber rifled musket

This was the wartime contract  with rivited waist belt loops.  Federal contractors were required to mark their products.  Production began in July 1862.  However some of the Pattern 57  items made after Nov. 1861 reflect the rivits in the waist belt loops.  So there was something of a transitional period .  The .69 caliber smoothbore boxes  went out of production in February 1862.  Following that date, when smoothbore arms were issued the .69. rifled musket box was issued.  When necessary,  cartridge boxes were issued on the basis of if the ammunition fits.
