J. B. Sickles & Company

At the outbreak of the Civil War, J. B. Sickles was a well established St. Louis firm. Originally located at 509 N. Main Street, Sickles manufactured all types of horse tack as well as selling saddlery hardware.

Sickles produced at least 10,000 sets of infantry accoutrements during the Civil War. Incorporated in 1882 the company continued in business well into hte 1940's.

Our reproduction Sickles cartridge box is copied from an original that featured extensive use of waxed flesh leather in the latch tab, tool pouch, as well as waist and shoulder belt loops. The use of waxed flesh leather is indicative of the leather shortages create by war-time demand. The original box is believed to have been issued to a Kansas soldier.
