The Atlanta Arsenal Cartridge Box and Cap Pouch
The Atlanta Arsenal in Atlanta, GA was a major supplier of materiel to the Confederate
Army. It produced both ammunition, accoutrements and materiels. In 1863-64 the Atlanta Arsenal emplyed nearly
5,500 men and women. Atlanta Arsenal accoutrements are
good for a western
Confederate impression.
About the markings: Specimens are
known with 1862 and 1863 dates. An
arced stamp is observed on the
original
cap pouch while straight line stamps
have been found on the cartridge
box
inner flaps.

that only sergeants were issued boxes with tool

C. S. Arsenal
Baton Rouge
At the time Louisiana seceded from the Union
on January
26, 1861, the United States Arsenal at Baton Rouge had been in the hands of state forces just over two weeks.
By the Spring of 1861 the arsenal was under control of the Confederate government.
Richard Lambert, Military Store Keeper, was in command and was assisted by Capt. J. C. Booth.
Through the spring and fall of 1861
Lambert and Booth purchased about 3,000 sets of Accoutrements from the New Orleans firm of Magee, Horter & George. With an eye towards augmenting these supplies, Lambert, in May and June of 1861 purchased
76 sides of bridle leather as well as sixteen saddlers stitching horses. The
C. S. Arsenal likely remained in operation until the fall of Baton
Rouge on May 28, 1862. (View copies of the original Magee, Horter & George
invoices by clicking on link at right.)
During
its brief operation it supplied ordnance stores and ammunition to Confederate troops at Pensacola, Florida. In addition distinctive sets of accoutrements were produced utilizing a waist belt
with a fork tongue frame buckle.

This box was based
on the measurements
for the U.S.
pattern of March 1857. Roughly
speaking, a .58 caliber box that is about
one-half inch short.
We were the first to reproduce
these boxes,
our copies were viewed by the
owners of
the original and judged first
rate. I was told
that Confederate made ammunition such as
the .58 Gardner bullet fits perfectly
in the tins.
