Historical Note on A Button Manufacturing Plant
Winter Of 1862-1863
"While on an inspecting tour in Columbus, Ga. in the winter of 1862-63, I was informed that wooden, horn and bone buttons were being manufactured there, and I visited the plant. The factory was owned by a former lieutenant of the Confederate army, who had lost an arm in one of the early battles.
The motive power of his factory was an engine of moderate horsepower that had been used to run a printing press. So complete were the saws, borers, and drying kilns that in the final process of their manufacture the completed buttons dropped into the hoppers with as much rapidity as nails from a nail making machine."
Dr. S.H. Stout, Medical Director of Hospitals in Confederate Veteran Magazine

Our Hand Made Hardwood Buttons
Our button making machines are not quite so rapid as the originals but they do produce the finest historically accurate reproductions of wooden, recessed center, two and four hole Confederate wooden buttons on the market.

4 Hole Richmond Depot Button

This high dome, four hole, buttons

seem to be extensively used in

Richmond Depot jackets.  It has

a slightly smaller outer diameter

and a  smaller diameter thread

well than what is typical for rhe

two hole button.  Another subtle

nuance is the slight flat area

just next to the thread well

which is not seen on the two

hole buttons. This style button

was originally producted by

the Gibson brothers and is the

subject of  a recent internet

article.

Brass Tipped Round Cord Laces

These are hard to find brass tipped, waxed

cotton, round cord laces. The brass tips or

aglets* are created by rolling and crimping

a small piece of sheet brass directly onto

the laces. Missouri Boot and Shoe has an

original hand crimping tool and hand crimps

each tip in place on the cord.  These are great

for women's shoe, walking shoes and other

styles calling for round cord lace. Color Black Only

Buy an extra pair now to have on hand to replace

worn laces.

*Aglet or aiglet from Old French aguillette or aiguillette

meaning needle. An aglet is a small plastic or metal sheath

used on each end of a shoelace to keep the fibers of the lace

or cord from unraveling; its firmness and narrow profile make

t easier to hold the lace and feed it through the eyelets.
